Here I will show you how to keep secondary monitor as secondary when closing laptop lid.
I work with my laptop with an external monitor connected to it.
I like to stream movies in the external monitor while working on other boring stuff such as emails in my laptop monitor.
Once I was done with the boring stuff, I wanted to close the laptop lid and continue enjoying the movie displaying on the external monitor and keep secondary monitor as secondary when closing laptop lid.
The problem was that when closing the laptop lid, windows 7 would black out the screen for a few seconds an designate the external monitor as primary and move/adjust all open windows and applications to it.
Opening back the lid, the laptop screens becomes the primary screen again and all applications would be re-arranged again.
This is an annoying feature of Windows 7.
After a long research, I found the solution on some Spanish forum. The solution works and I share it here:
- Go to Control Panel >> Device Manager
- System devices >> ACPI lid
- Select “ACPI lid” properties, and then go to “Driver” tab.
- Select “Update driver”
- Select “Browse my computer for driver software” and “Let me pick..” Uncheck “Show compatible hardware”.
- In “Manufacturer” select “(Standard system devices)”. In “Model” select “Volume manager”.
- Next, next, OK, OK, restart the system.
Enjoy!
I don’t mind you buying me a cup of coffee 🙂
Thanks for this solution! It was a big problem for me.
I’ve used multiple monitors w. a laptop for years, and this solution solves a long-time annoyance I’ve always had about closing the laptop lid and monitor re-positioning. Thanks.
i was desparate so i tried it. works great on windows 7 ultimate thinkpad t420. no more stupid monitor problems.
posts like this one is the reason i participate in the whole internet community making videos and writing my own posts to help people solve things i happened to figure out.
